Hero workouts are more than a test of physical ability. They give us the chance to sweat, suffer and at the same time remember the ones who fell in the line of duty (in some cases close friends) one rep at a time.

I would like to thank those of you who were there to do ‘The Ten’ our own B3F benchmark hero-wod we do every year around April 7th.

To me personally this particular workout is very close to my heart as it brings back memories of 10 friends I lost during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

The ten commandos, murdered on April 7, 1994, were part of the second commando battalion and they came to Rwanda in 1994 as part of the UN Peacekeeping mission (MINUAR).

They were killed as they attempted to protect former Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana, who was murdered by the Presidential Guard alongside her husband on the same day.

One of the victims, Lt Thierry Lotin, had been together with me in the military academy. At the time of his death, his wife was pregnant with their first child, who was born one month and half after he was killed.

Yannick Leroy, an NCO, had done the Mortar course together with me… he was goofy, but always serious when work had to be done.

The clip in the following link summarizes what happened that day.

Remember them.
